Have you noticed a person copying other's mannerism?Probably you would notice many.Evan sometimes you will copy other's mannerism unconsciously. This effect is called as chameleon effect. But why its happening?
The New York university researchers Tanya Chartrand and John Bargh conduced the experiment which explains how the chameleon effect. They gave a task to the two persons in which one of them is an actor. The actor explains the photos and the other listens. While he explains he used to smile, rubbed his or her face, smile or move his or her feets, the observer tend to follow those. At the end of the task, the most people said that they had not noticed their partner's mannerisms. This happens unconsciously.
In the second experiment the participants were partnered with the actors again. Here the actors who
were partnered used to follow the person's behavior in their conversation. Most of them were likely to say that they liked their conversation and interaction.
In third experiment the actors were supposed to show more empathy in their conversation. As a result the people tend to attach to their actions and mannerism very soon. This happens because people like those whose some of the behaviours are similar to them. This happens between the two friends or lover couples. This is why the chameleon effect happens between them.
The mechanism behind the chameleon effect is perception-behaviour link. You tend to copy their gestures, postures, speech patterns, moods, etc if you like them emotionally. It's almost perception behaviour link. This chameleon effect will make your interactions more attracting and pleasant. This helps even when you are interacting with strangers.Speakers use this technique to attract the observer.
